The Beginning: 4 Million Slaves "Stolen" from Africa
Although the roots of Capoeira are disputed and lost in persecution or myth, it is certain that the seeds for the birth of Capoeira were sown when (approximately 4 million) Slaves were imported from Africa to Brazil by the Portuguese Colonists. These Africans brought with them their traditions and rituals, and the Bantu groups were central the origins of Capoeira. The culture of slavery in Brazil brought together African, Native American & European cultures, to gradually combine various dance forms and martial arts into what is now known as the Art of Capoeira.
Disputed Origins
Other (disputed) origins of this Fight, Dance Game include the N'Golo courtship dance in which men were understood to have fought within a dance to win their bride. This theory originates from Camara Cascudo (folclores dos Brasil, 1967) but Waldeloir Rego (Capoeira Angola, Ediora Itapona, Salvador, 1968) warned against this 'strange theory' and stressed it should be looked upon with reserve. It is more likely that it is just one of the many dances that contributed to the roots of Capoeira during days of slavery. With time this secret art was to evolve into a highly effective form of self defense.
