CAPOEIRA IS ALWAYS PLAYED TO A RHYTHM
Without music there is no Capoeira. Each game is played according to the berimbau, and the rhythms that are being played. This helps beginners to ease into the movements. The experienced Capoeirista will be in tune with the music, and change his/her game according to the rhythm (known as toque in Portuguese).
There are many songs of friendship, survival, and life, and many are common across the whole Capoeira community. Masters such as Mestre Suassuna keep Capoeira evolving, with their contribution of new songs. Yet another sign of the creativity that seems to come with Capoeira.
The music, the songs and clapping provide the energy for the Roda. The main instruments in Capoeira are the Berimbau, Atabaque, Pandeiras, Agogo. The energy in a game is rooted in the music, and is fuelled by the Berimbau, the instruments, singing the chorus and clapping to the beat.
