WHAT IS THE RODA?
Roda basically means circle. It is within this circle that the Game of Capoeira takes place, and many would say it represents the circle of life. At the foot of the Roda is the Bateria (insruments), and all students stand in a circle. This is a chance to enjoy the game, while practicing some sequences from class.
The more you have practiced in class, the more naturally your game will come in the Roda. Mestre Deputado points out that the music should help you to stop thinking and start feeling. (Yes - just as Bruce Lee and any Martial Arts Masters are known to say). The more you control your emotions, the more you will see benefits on your game. This builds coordination, and improves the reflexes.
RODA ETIQUETTE
You will be introduced to these issues in class, and the best way to learn is by watching the senior students. One thing to remember is to just be careful when you enter he Roda. If you are not entering with another player, you should offer to play (or 'buy out') the player with the higher cord, and be careful but clear that you intend to play.
Once your game is over shake hands, and be careful not to turn your back on the centre of the Roda when you exit. This is all in order to ensure you do not get hurt accidentally. A traditional way to exit the Roda is from either end of the Bateria. Don't worry too much. These things will be made clear in class...
